Marcos day in Birchington
Yesterday (August 11th) was an historic one for New Beckenham Bowls Club and its predecessors. By train and car (I think David Jones walked) a party of approximately 20 Club members made the long trip to Birchington-on-Sea for the Kent County Bowls Finals. At 2.00pm on a blisteringly hot day, Marco D’Apice went to battle with John Ouzman of Sidcup B.C. for the Unbadged Singles Championship of the County. The Green was dry and fast and gave both competitors a challenge in the early stages with John winning the first 2 ends. However, Marco soon seemed to come to terms with the pace and slowly built a small lead. On several occasions John rescued 3 down positions with his last wood but Marco opened a reasonable gap and despite a rally of several winning ends from John, he eventually ran out winner at 21 – 13.
This is the Club’s first County badge and certainly County Championship for many a year and I am sure you will join with me in congratulating Marco on his achievement and in so doing bringing the New Beckenham Bowls Club’s name firmly to the attention of the County. We are very proud of you Marco – well bowled!
